What is a lumber trader?

The answer is straightforward: A lumber trader purchases and sells lumber for profit.

Why does the industry need lumber traders?

Lumber traders’ function within the wholesale segment of the supply chain. They do not own production assets, nor do they usually meet the final demand of builders. One cannot simply walk into their offices and purchase lumber straight off the shelf. When visiting a lumber trader’s office, one will find computers, phones, and whiteboards, but no physical products. They serve as intermediaries. Everyone hates the “middleman,” so why do producers and buyers not eliminate wholesale traders? In the lumber industry, wholesale traders are essential for adding value of both the producers and sellers. Without the additional value lumber traders bring, they would not exist. They handle freight bookings for lumber shipments, offer credit terms that are often more flexible than those of producers, and address short-term supply and demand issues, creating strong, trust-based relationships. These attributes set lumber traders apart, rather than explaining their necessity, so the main reason lumber wholesalers exist is that they provide market liquidity.

Who are lumber traders?

Many people identify as traders, and they come in various forms. Collectively, they create liquidity amid the imbalance of supply and demand, through their methods and importance to the overall supply chain differ. These different roles can be visualized as components of a pyramid. The risk taken and value created both increase as one moves up the pyramid. Greater risk translates to greater reward, but higher cost of failure.

At the base of the pyramid are traders who buy and sell on a transactional basis. They complete purchases and sales within a single day, but only with a purchase order already secured from the customer. The term “transactional” is not meant to be demeaning. These traders function as an extension of either the sell side, the buy side, or both, adding value to each in the process. Some producers outsource their sales, and some buyers outsource their purchases, with lumber traders serving as both the value creators and beneficiaries in these transactions.

On the next level are speculative traders. They buy lumber with the intention of selling it on the same day or very soon after purchasing, ideally it is sold before it even leaves the mill. While they do speculate, they generally avoid taking large positions. Sometimes, they add value by purchasing one product and converting it into another through secondary processing. Speculative traders create value like transactional traders, but they also add value for mills by committing loads in advance of demand or meeting specific customer needs.

The very top level is strategic trading. These traders perform all the roles of the lower levels, along with maintaining long-term supply relationships and sometimes commit to future volumes and prices for their buyers. Most importantly, they consistently commit to purchasing loads from mills every day, regardless of market conditions. This reliable purchasing makes them irreplaceable to suppliers, ensuring them future access to supply. In turn, this reliability makes them crucial to their buyers, as they always have the necessary supply. This level involves the highest risk, highest value, and highest reward.
